Greek Island Plein Air Workshop with Felicia van Bork

Students can expect to work hard and laugh often! Felicia van Bork's intensive plein air oil painting workshop welcomes painters of all levels, including those who have never tried traditional oils or painted outdoors before. Her approach avoids volatile solvents entirely, making use of the elegant qualities of walnut or safflower oil instead.

Artists bring their own plein air kit including easel, brushes, backpack, palette, panel carrier, paint and medium. A complete list of recommended supplies and equipment is sent to each registered student.

A month before the workshop begins, there's a group video call to give everyone a head start on asking questions and getting acquainted. Once the class has arrived on beautiful Thasos, the daily routine kicks in: starting before your first welcome feast on Thasos, and before each subsequent dinner, students do a fun lesson to kickstart the next day's work. Lessons consist of concise and interactive instruction on color mixing, brush handling, and composition. The following morning, artists are taken to the day's first spectacular location to paint for 2-3 hours with one-on-one guidance. The group then returns to home base for lunch and joyful feedback on the morning's work. There will be time to kick back for an hour or so before the day's second outing. In the afternoon, students compose and paint a second 9 x 12 inch plein air painting at a beautiful location, again with one-on-one instruction.

After the day's painting, there's free time to swim, relax, or hang out before dinner.

"This has been my first painting class that actually has taught me about values, colour, and composition."—KC, Plein Air on Vancouver Island

Really enjoyed the whole class. I think I could take it over and over again." —KP, The Liberated Brush

"I loved her kind approach and how she pushed us to paint when it was uncomfortable. I loved this and would sign up again." —TR, PDQ Portraits

 Our Location: Thessaloniki and Thasos

Participants will arrive and depart from Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki, but the majority of our time together will be on Thasos. The northernmost island in the Aegean, Thasos has been famous since ancient times for its marble quarries and its rugged beauty. The island is mountainous and green, offering visitors access to pristine beaches as well as small inland villages. Travelers arrive from the mainland by ferry to the city of Limenas (also known as Thasos Town). Today, Limenas is a working archeological site, built atop and surrounded by ruins, including an impressive amphitheater and an ancient agora.

From Limenas, we travel by bus to Alyki on the southern coast of the island. We will live and paint in the proximity of a mile-long peninsula flanked by three beaches, as well as an ancient temple to the Dioscuri, an early Christian basilica, and an enormous Roman marble quarry.
